When we were young we only did what was instinctively and naturally in perfect alignment with our drive and enthusiasm and our passion. Everything was exciting. Anything new was thrilling and stimulating. There was never a dull moment. Life was electrifying and invigorating.

As we grew older, especially as we moved in to the world of work, perhaps engaged in relationships, started a family, moved house a few times, needed a larger income, outside influences had the effect of restricting what we’d love to do and instead creating things we should or ought or even must do. Slowly but surely we move from a life that feels free and liberating to having slipped into a life full of compromises ……………. and then we settle.

As we move from one business or job to another, we slide a little further each time from doing what we love, to doing what we feel we have to. Perhaps to make or earn more money. Perhaps it’s geography or family. In any case, one morning we wake up with that thought. The thought that there’s got to be more to life than what we are experiencing right now.

It wasn’t a conscious set of decisions that brought us to here. Each decision we made that moved us further away from our joy probably made sense on some level at the time. Yet slowly but surely we made our way to here.

Now we have become so used to doing what we do, accepting that its far from ideal, even justifying to ourselves the compromises that we have made along the way.
